Excerpt

“I have tickets for a comedy show. How about it?” He reached out, gripping my hand again. Glancing down at his fingers as they laced through mine, a soft flutter in my chest made me forget to breathe momentarily. He still had it, his paralyzing charm, I mean.
“Um, yeah. Sounds great.” I forced a smile as I sucked in a breath. I hoped and prayed I wasn’t making a mistake. I had to remember to be the first to run this time.
Yep, I’ll reel him in and then run out the door so fast, he won’t even know what hit him.
So my plan to break his heart was in motion as he softly tugged at my hand, pulling me towards the front doors of the Bellagio. Making it to the sidewalk, he led me to the Taxi line and hailed one. I was curious where he was taking me to, but my mouth was dry as a desert, which tasted of lemon cherry sorbet. My self-doubt was already creeping into my mind before I’d even had a chance to douse it.
“You alright?”
His voice pulled me back to the present as we slipped into the back of the Taxi cab. He scooted in after me and instructed to the cabbie our destination. Hugging my arms in the cold of the AC blasting from the vents, Sasha slipped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me closer. Frozen, I wasn’t sure what to do. Relax, relax, I kept telling myself. The entire plan would be ruined if I didn’t loosen up. He might even see through my ruse if I wasn’t careful.
That wasn’t something I could afford to let happen.

BLURB

Sometimes all you need is Patience.

Life’s been hard for Zeke. Being a punching bag for his alcoholic father has turned him into stone. Not even the dodgy trailer park he lives in can scare him. Fighting is his release and sex, drugs, and his guitar bring him peace, but deep down Zeke isn’t quite as hard as he makes himself out to be. When he meets Patience, she finds all his broken pieces and puts him back together, but she’s a ray of light in his shadowed life and the last thing he wants to do is bring her into his dark world. Playing careless is easy, playing the bad guy can be fun, but playing Patience is impossible, especially when she can see right through him.

Zeke isn’t the only one who’s broken, and for the first time, in a long time, Patience feels alive. Her black and white world gets a shot of color when she meets Zeke. He’s unlike anyone she’s ever met with his tattoos, piercings, and blunt honesty. She wants nothing more than to let go and ride the wild side with him, but some wounds never heal and the broken pieces of Patience aren’t so easy to find.

EXCERPT

“How did you know I was here?” I asked. I didn’t want the kids behind her to hear us, so I moved in closer. “Does your daddy know you’re stalking me, Snowflake?”

Her eyes filled with panic and it pissed me off that she was afraid of him. Then she stepped back so quickly that she almost tripped over her sneakers. With a pinched mouth, she glared up at me. She was pissed off about something.

“My. Name. Is. Patience!” she yelled at me.

I had to admit, I liked it when she yelled at me. Mostly because it let me know she wasn’t as weak and defenseless as she looked, but also because I’m a fucked up individual and occasionally I get off on being jerked around.

Her voice reached every wall of the gym and everyone turned to look at us. I watched as a pretty, red blush crept up her neck and filled her cheeks. Her eyes started to water and become bloodshot and she looked like she was about to blow up from embarrassment. The poor thing, she looked like she was about to pass out, but it was funny to see her so pissed off and embarrassed. I kind of enjoyed ruffling her feathers.

I laughed softly to myself, earning another evil glower and I couldn’t help put poke the bear one more time.

“Careful, Snowflake, if your face gets too hot, you might melt.”

Excerpt:

Steptree steeled himself for the gruesome sight he was sure awaited him. He let his breath go shallow; a trick he’d learnt to prevent the stench of death from making him wretch. He’d seen some awful violence in his time, but despite attending hundreds of murders in his ten year career, he’d never quite grown immunity. However, none of the sordid and violent ugliness he’d encountered up to this point could have prepared him for the sight in front of him.
He was expecting horror but he was greeted with a sight that was nothing short of beautiful.
At first, Steptree wasn’t sure it wasn’t all an elaborate trick; that he hadn’t been dragged from his warm bed for the sake of a stolen statue. Approaching closer, he realized it wasn’t a statue but the corpse of a young man, still standing. He was posed in the movement of a kiss; his eyes were closed, his hand raised as if still cupping the cheek of his lover. The boy almost sparkled, as if his skin were made of a quartz marble: It was so white as to almost be a shade of pale blue.
Steptree gasped, and tears pricked at the corner of eyes as he thought of how the boy was the same color as the moon, and just as luminescent. Never before had the sight of death moved him to a feeling of such sorrow. In front of him was poetry that went beyond words.
The boy sparkled. The faint flush of a youthful blush was still painted on his cheek. Steptree extended his fingers to explore the thin translucent crust which covered the boy – it was ice; perfect snowflakes had caught in the fibers of the young man’s velvet jacket and laced his eyelashes.
Steptree was an exceptionally logical man, but for the life of him he could not understand how on a slightly chilly October evening, a young man had spontaneously frozen to death. A creepy sensation spread over his skin and an alien sense of superstition entered his thoughts: It was as if the boy had been placed under a fairytale spell.
“Brown, how is this possible?” Steptree asked, his mind whirling.
“It isn’t, Sir! It isn’t possible.”

He's Gone by Deb Caletti

Inline image 3

Synopsis:
“What do you think happened to your husband, Mrs. Keller?”

The Sunday morning starts like any other, aside from the slight hangover. Dani Keller wakes up on her Seattle houseboat, a headache building behind her eyes from the wine she drank at a party the night before. But on this particular Sunday morning, she’s surprised to see that her husband, Ian, is not home. As the hours pass, Dani fills her day with small things. But still, Ian does not return. Irritation shifts to worry, worry slides almost imperceptibly into panic. And then, like a relentless blackness, the terrible realization hits Dani: He’s gone.

As the police work methodically through all the logical explanations—he’s hurt, he’s run off, he’s been killed—Dani searches frantically for a clue as to whether Ian is in fact dead or alive. And, slowly, she unpacks their relationship, holding each moment up to the light: from its intense, adulterous beginning, to the grandeur of their new love, to the difficulties of forever. She examines all the sins she can—and cannot—remember. As the days pass, Dani will plumb the depths of her conscience, turning over and revealing the darkest of her secrets in order to discover the hard truth—about herself, her husband, and their lives together.

Dani is a very strong character that could draw tears to the face of an emotional reader very easily.
