Review
This is a wonderful read. This was my first L.M. Preston book and I am certainly glad I gave this author a chance. I love her writing style, her characters are awesome, and she makes you feel like you are with the characters throughout the entire story.

Excerpt:
“I mean, how does your mom do it? Most ladies can’t even find a guy to marry them – my mom is still ‘dating’ my dad and can’t get him to commit. But your mom,” Amy inhaled loudly, “she’s like…hum, like a husband whisperer or something,” Amy laughed.
Jewel lifted her shades to peek out at Amy, “So are you saying guys and dogs are the same?” she jumped up and plopped down on Amy’s butt to tickle Amy’s feet, “You calling my mom a dog trainer,” she giggled.
Whack! The volleyball hit Jewel on the forehead with such force, she fell backwards. Jewel’s foot hit’s Meg’s drink and red juice splattered all over her white bikini. Amy’s butt went upward to knock Jewel onto the hard deck. Falling back, Jewel’s head hit the wood floor knocking her shades off.
Jewel tried to catch her breath. Pain and anger became one as she blinked against the glare of the sun. Her eyes meet the dark brown ones of a laughing boy standing above her. A gorgeous guy, but who cared, he’d hit her so hard with his dumb ball, she was seeing stars.
“You! You! Stupid, don’t you know how to hit a ball?” Jewel struggled to get up, and pushed the boys tanned hand away from her. His unruly long black hair, dark eyes, and full lips cocked up in a smirk made her angrier.
“I’m trying to help you,” his baritone voice sounded like he was fighting against laughter, and he grasped her hand. His firm muscular shaped arm flexed as he bent to help her.
Jewel slapped it away, “I don’t want your help you ruined my bathing suit and,” she touched her forehead where a small lump was forming, “put a knot on my head!” She pushed at him and stood up, grabbing the volleyball off the ground. His yummy face taunted her when his eyebrow went up questioning her motive. Then she aimed the ball at his head and missed.
He ducked, “What was that for?” His laughing eyes turned stormy.
Waving her hand at him, she stepped forward. “Idiots that hit girls with their,” Jewel slipped back, and tried to get her balance, but the last thing she remembered was him smirking at her as her head hit the floor again.

EXCERPT

“I’m sorry—” he said and faced the customer “—but I’m closed for the evening.”

“I’m not here to buy anything from you,” a young man that was as big as him said.

“I’m sorry?” Eddie said, and took notice of the bat he raised and rested on his shoulder.

“No, you’re not,” the young man said and flashed a smile. His silver teeth gleamed in the florescent light. “But you will be.”

He swung the bat at Eddie’s head.

Clunk!

Eddie saw a flash of light and an intense throbbing pain filled his head. He staggered around a bit, not certain what just happened or what he needed to do. He hadn’t been this stunned since the seventh grade when big Tommy Plains sucker punched him. It was strange, this thought, as was his vision that blurred and refocused and then dimmed. A high-pitched buzzing sound filled his ears and he remembered he had to finish cleaning the counter before he could go home.

“You had this coming to you,” the voice that sounded as though it was underwater said. “You should learn to keep your hands to yourself. Now it’s time for you to say goodnight.”

Eddie was struck a second time. All the pain left his body in an instant, but he couldn’t feel his body and everything moved around him precariously, bending and shifting with blots of black and explosive flashes of light. His eyes rolled into the back of his head and he fell forward.

Tour Stop | Broken Strings by Nancy Means Wright

Book Title: Broken Strings
Author: Nancy Means Wright
Release Date: May 7, 2013
Genre: Mystery
Publisher: GMTA Publishing, LLC
Presented by: As You Wish Tours

BRIEF SYNOPSIS

When puppeteer Marion collapses during a performance of Sleeping Beauty, her friend Fay Hubbard promises to carry on. But Fay already has her hands full with three demanding foster children, Apple and Beets, who have a fractious jailbird father—and sixteen-year-old Chance, who has a crush on a much older guy in a band called Ghouls. And now Marion’s husband Cedric seems more interested in a drop-dead-gorgeous French teacher than in any string puppets. And who is the mysterious Skull-man who warns of death if the show goes on with one of Marion’s offbeat endings? When an autopsy reveals that Marion had swallowed a dose of deadly crushed yew—and a friend finds her sister dangling from a rod like a marionette, a shocked Fay goes after the killer.

 Excerpt

“But I just got here,” Fay said. “We haven’t had a chance to talk.”

“I’m sorry,” the aide said.

“Both her daughters were killed,” Fay said. “We need to find out who did it. She might have some memorabilia in her room that could offer a clue.”

The aide thought about it. She stuck a tongue in her cheek, then blew out a breath.

“You can look in her room, number twenty-one. Unfortunately, she shares it with the woman who took her puppet. We might have to switch them.”

“Please do,” Fay said, remembering her own mother after the breast cancer surgery. Her own quiet mother in a bed without a window, between two women who had roomfuls of visitors. It cost two months’ savings, but Fay had her mother moved to a single. Once she found her mother staring out the window, quoting from Robert Frost. “For once then, something,” she whispered. What was that “something?”

Now her quirky brain gave back what the psychic had said about Beauty. Stormy had seen a cave, and inside, a marionette with long leafy vines attached to its head, shoulder, and limbs. And then “in front of my very eyes,” Stormy said, Beauty began to age. Till the vines turned brown and snapped like twigs. “Maybe you can make something of it," she’d told Fay. “I can’t. I’m just a psychic. The visions go through me like chocolate.”

Fay couldn’t think of any caves Marion would have gone into. Except the cave of her own mind. Once Fay had played a blind woman who lived almost entirely in her mind. She’d gone around for days with a blindfold, and tried to move back into her past and it was like a cave. One rehearsal she’d keeled over in a dead faint, she was so frightened.

Excerpt

As soon as my head hit my pillow, and I fully relaxed, my eyes began to grow heavy.   All of the excitement I had been through today had taken its toll on me mentally.  I desperately needed to sleep and recharge.  Before I knew it, I was out cold.
Images flashed behind my eyes, interrupting hours of deep, sound sleep as I softly heard someone whispering my name.  Something was pulling at my psyche, demanding entrance, and I finally gave in to the request.
Amun was standing by large body of water with his back to me.  As soon as I took a step toward him, he whirled around looking surprised but relieved.
“What took you so long?” he demanded, his black eyes taking on anger.  “I’ve been reaching out to you all day.  I could feel you but I didn’t have access to you…I couldn’t access your mind.  Something is interfering.  HOW are you keeping me out?”
“Ha!” I laughed and sneered at the small victory.  “You mean to tell me you can’t just come into my dreams whenever you want to?”
He flashed to me and grabbed me by my throat.  “You drank their blood?!” he raged in my face as he glared back and forth between my now colorless eyes.  “But you are mine!”
“I am no one’s!” I yelled back as I ripped his hand from my neck and pushed him away from me; the action utterly shocking Amun.  “No one owns me!  No one will EVER own me!”
“A piece of my very soul is inside of you,” he growled, quickly recovering.  “You are mine and you will do as I say.  You will come to me this night!  I DEMAND IT!”
I put my hands on my hips and smirked at him.  “Demand away, Amun.  I don’t know what you’re expecting, but I’m not going to just come crawling to whatever hole you’re off hiding in.  You have no control over me.  Get used to it!”
“Oh, I have plenty of control over you,” he sneered evilly as he took another step toward me.  “All those disgusting feelings of love and desire you felt for that Day Walker…Archer?  I put them there.  I made you dream of him, want him, make love to him…  I made you want to stay with him when you were so set on leaving.  I couldn’t very well allow you to leave and ruin all my plans!  But in the end, you betrayed me, Damu.  There will be a heavy price to pay for that.  You were supposed to stay, complete your change and then kill him and all his children.  Instead you drink his blood and pollute yourself?!  You could have been something great, something beautifully fierce and exquisitely savage, but now you are just another common, pathetic Day Walker!”
I felt my eyes flicker black as anger consumed me.  “I’m not your fucking toy, Amun!  If you think you can force me to feel things and do things for you, you have another thing coming.  I’m going to kill you for what you’ve done to me!  As God is my witness, you will DIE by MY hand!”
Amun chuckled as he looked me up and down and then tsked.  “Oh, my sweet Nisiqtu…you are still so headstrong.  I believe I was wrong about you.  You carry my mark in your eyes.  We are not so different after all, you and I.  You may be a Day Walker now, but the potential for greatness is still there.  The possibilities are endless now.  There is so much we can do to them now that you are one of them.  They will never suspect-”
“Fuck you!” I spat as I turned and walked away.  I didn’t have to listen to his bullshit.  He may have pulled me into this dream but, come hell or high water, I was going to walk out of it.
“You have one week to come to me, Skye,” Amun yelled at my back.  “If you do not obey me, I will start killing your friends and family one by one and I’ll start with that fiery girl who shares your home.  I believe I’ll sew her colorful skin into a new hat.”
I whirled around, my eyes wide and fearful.  “You lay one finger on her and I’ll-”
“Silence!” Amun roared angrily, his voice echoing loudly all around me.  “Seven days, Skye.  And you had better be wearing the presents I left for you when you come to me.”

With her life on the line, she narrowly avoids another murder attempt—only to run headlong into Lord Brigham de Mornay, a man most consider a monster.

When Aurora de Marquise escapes her vicious uncle and fells one of the most powerful barons in all of England, she knows she’s bitten off more than she can chew. Only one question remains…who will reach her first—the warrior hell-bent on revenge or the uncle determined to see her dead?
